Why Is My AC Not Cooling? Causes and Fixes
By Urban Repair Company · Last updated: 20 October 2026
An AC that runs but does not cool usually has one of a few causes.
Dirty filters or coils. Dust blocks airflow, so the room cools slowly. Cleaning the filter is the one fix most people can do safely.
Low refrigerant. The gas in an AC does not get used up. If it is low, there is a leak that needs finding and repairing, not just a top-up.
Faulty capacitor or compressor. If the indoor fan runs but the outdoor unit does not start, or it hums and stops, the capacitor or compressor may be failing.
Sensor or PCB faults. A faulty temperature sensor or control board can make the AC cut off early or behave erratically.
Blocked outdoor unit. Dust or poor airflow around the outdoor unit reduces cooling.
What to check first: set the mode to cool, lower the temperature setting, wash the filter, and make sure nothing blocks the outdoor unit. If cooling does not return, switch the AC off and book an inspection. Running a faulty AC can damage the compressor.
